David Byrne Designs Bike Racks for New York City
New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) has installed nine new bikes racks designed by musician, artist, and biking enthusiast David Byrne. Byrne drew the inspiration for his designs from the New York neighborhoods where the racks are placed. The steel dollar-sign design called "Wall Street" is located on Wall Street itself. The guitar design, named "Hipster," is located in Williamsburg, a vibrant neighborhood for music.
(Photos: New York City Department of Transportation) David Byrne is also a juror on the CityRacks Design Competition, run jointly by DOT and Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.
The nine racks will be removed approximately eleven months after their installation.
David Byrne, co-founder of the popular 1980s group "Talking Heads", has been involved with photography and design since his college days and has been publishing and exhibiting his work for the past decade.
