Merce My Way: Photographs by Mikhail Baryshnikov

Book Cover - Merce My Way: Photographs by Mikhail BaryshnikovLegendary dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov has been a photographer for more than 30 years, and his photographs have been exhibited in museums and galleries all over the world. Last summer Baryshnikov exhibited his photographs of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company at Weinstein Gallery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The exhibition, titled "Merce My Way", is made up of large, colorful, blurred images of the dancers.

According to an article at the Minnesota Public Radio website, "Baryshnikov got up on stage with the dancers during their final dress rehearsal, and darted around them as they performed, often just inches away."

Mikhail Baryshnikov: Merce My Way - Untitled #10In his comments about his fans paying more attention to him at the gallery openings than to his photographs, he says if his fans really want to know him as a person, they should give his photographs a closer look.

"It's much more personal in a way than my appearances, say, in Sex and the City, because this is deeply in me and I'm not playing any role. That's my eyes," he said, while pointing to a photograph, "the way I see Merce's work... and what can be more personal than that?"

Mikhail Baryshinikov has now released a book of these photographs titled Merce My Way.  The book includes 85 color images. He discusses his photographs in the video posted below.
