The Creek: Artwork by Antony Hegarty

Isis Gallery in London currently has on display "The Creek", an exhibit of artwork by Antony Hegarty, lead singer of the highly acclaimed Antony and the Johnsons. Hegarty, who presents his artwork under the name Antony, describes himself as transgender, and this influences his music and his art.

Isis Gallery says the following about Antony's art:

"Recalling the notebooks of William S. Burroughs and Antonin Artaud, Antony’s collages employ a transgender intervention to readjust the colonial topography of the American Dream."

Antony discussed showing his art in a recent interview with the New York Times:

"And he admitted some trepidation at showing his art, which he considers a dialogue with himself. 'But then I decided, it’s a body of work, you have a right,' he said. 'Sure, you’re being opportunist, in that people are only interested because you’ve done well as a singer. But there’s no harm in taking another risk.'”

"The Creek" opened January 17, 2009 and runs through February 28, 2009.
