Dennis Hopper Celebrates the Summer of Love
In 1969, Dennis Hopper directed, co-wrote, and starred in the movie Easy Rider with Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson. Parts of Easy Rider were filmed in Taos New Mexico. Dennis Hopper also lived in Taos for 15 years. This summer Taos will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film with Taos Summer of Love 2009. The celebration lasts from May through September 2009 and will include art, film, and music events. Dennis Hopper will participate in the Taos Summer of Love with two art exhibits at the Harwood Museum of Art.
From May 8 through September 20, 2009, the Harwood Museum will display "Hopper at Harwood", an exhibit of Silver Gelatin Prints by Dennis Hopper. According to the museum, the exhibit focuses on "photographs demonstrating Hoppers rich narrative ability with a single lens reflex camera."

Concurrent with this exhibit is a second one in which Dennis Hopper curates artists Larry Bell, Ron Cooper, Ronald Davis, Ken Price & fellow actor/artist Robert Dean Stockwell. The museum says "These artists banded together in the early 1960’s, during a time when the number of serious artists in Los Angeles was minimal. Living in the same neighborhoods Bell, Cooper, Davis, Price and Stockwell frequented the same haunts and knew each other based on their chosen profession as artists."
There will be a public reception for the Dennis Hopper Exhibit on Saturday May 9, 2009. There will also be a "Dinner with Dennis Hopper and Friends", fundraising event for the Harwood Museum on Sunday May 3, 2009. This event will include a private exhibition viewing with guest curator Dennis Hopper and featured artists, Larry Bell, ken Price, Ronald David, Dean Stockwell and Ron Copper. Contact the museum for details.
In a recent New York Magazine interview, Dennis Hopper was asked if it was difficult to be taken seriously as an artist when he is known as an actor. He replied, "Yeah, it’s been very difficult. Being an actor, you’re always suspected of … well, acting. (Laughs.) They think you’re just pretending to be an artist, in this weird way."
