Although most people are probably familiar with Martin Mull as an actor, he was an artist first. Martin Mull began painting as a child and continued painting throughout his youth. He went on to earn both a bachelor of fine arts and a master of fine arts from Rhode Island School of Design. In 2006 I attended a Martin Mull art gallery event at San Diego State University at which he spoke about his artwork. He said that it was just luck that he became an actor. Martin Mull also performed as a musician early in his career and recorded several albums. He started playing music and acting for money to support his painting career.

An exhibition of paintings by Martin Mull will be on display at Stellan Holm Gallery in New York City from December 11, 2008 January 31, 2009. The exhibition, titled Seven Deadly Sins, features thirteen new paintings, including a series of seven paintings, each of which depicts a deadly sin. The paintings are based on discarded family photographs (none of which belongs to Mull) and popular images of the 1950s and 1960s. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, December 11 from 6 to 8pm. Contact the gallery for more information.
