Photographs by Leonard Nimoy: Maximum Beauty
Actor/director Leonard Nimoy is probably best known as the Vulcan, Spock in the science fiction television and movie series, Star Trek. Leonard Nimoy now spends much of his time creating and displaying his fine art photography. Nimoy’s love of photography began when he was a teenager. Later, in the 1970s he studied photography under Robert Heineken at UCLA, and in 2001 he received an “artist in residence” appointment at the American Academy in Rome. Leonard Nimoy’s photographs have been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the world. In 2002, he published "Shekhina
". According to the publisher “Shekhina presents the first-ever monograph of Leonard Nimoy, photographer. This exhaustive and eerily beautiful photographic study of the female form reveals Nimoy`s intrigue with scriptural mythology and ancient spirituality.”
Leonard Nimoy’s latest project “Maximum Beauty” is described as “An examination of our concepts of beauty and sexuality”. “Maximum Beauty” consists of photographs of large-bodied women. In most of the photographs the women are nude. In his artists statement, Nimoy says “I asked them to be proud, which was a condition they took to easily, quite naturally. Having completed the compositions that were initially planned, I then asked them to play some music that they had brought with them, and they quickly responded to the rhythms, dancing in a free-form circular movement with in the space. It was clear that they were comfortable with the situation, with each other, and were enjoying themselves.” The image posted here is an untitled work from “Maximum Beauty” by Leonard Nimoy. Later this year, the photographs from “Maximum Beauty” will be published in a book titled “Full Body Project
”.
