Janis Joplin's First Love Was Art
Rock and blues icon Janis Joplin hit the music scene in the 1960s with the San Francisco band Big Brother & the Holding Company. However, her first love was art. She began painting as a child. According to an article at the Rhino Records website, her younger sister Laura Joplin says that in her youth "She would get jobs around town to get canvas and oil paints," She says that art and fashion design were Janis Joplin’s early ambitions. Joplin’s family recently made her artwork available for sale to the public for the first time. Her paintings and drawings have been reproduced in limited editions, which are numbered and signed by her family, and come with certificates of authenticity from the Joplin estate.
