Great Park Gallery at Orange County Great Park in Irvine, California is hosting “Rhythm”, which they describe as “a multimedia experience that will engage the senses with vibrant visuals and thematic music.” The exhibition features artworks of a number of rock musicians including: Joseph Arthur, Brandon Boyd (Incubus), Matt Maust (Cold War Kids), Moby, and a collaborative project with drummers Dave Lombardo (Slayer), Chad Sexton (311), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Bill Ward (Black Sabbath).

Joseph Arthur tells the Orange County Register:

I love art that encourages you to follow your creativity, even if you don’t know what you’re doing.” Rock ’n’ roll is a bit like that too, he said. “You always have to have some ‘I don’t know what I’m doing’ in it.

Dave Lombardo and the other drummers in the exhibition use long-exposure photographs to capture their movements at the drums using lighted drumsticks. Color, light and other effects are used to make abstract images.

Brandon Boyd describes his pieces in the exhibition as a sort of “elaborate doodling.” He tells the Register:

There’s just sort of an upwelling or a roaming desire to see something kind of bloom, and I don’t know what it’s going to be,” Boyd said. “I have this hope in my heart when people look at them, that they’ll want to walk up closer to them … and hopefully get happily lost in them.

The free exhibition opens Saturday, September 3, 2016 and continues through November 13, 2016. Each Saturday during the exhibition, local musicians will play two-hour sets to complement the artwork.
