Legendary dancer and actor Mikhail Baryshnikov has been a photographer for many years, and his photographs have been exhibited in museums and galleries all over the world. Photographs by Baryshnikov are currently on display at ContiniArtUK in London. The exhibition, titled Dancing Away, is described by the gallery as “a visual representation of Baryshnikov’s very personal interpretation of dance and performance; an expert dancer’s reflection upon his own metier.” He uses a technique known as long exposure photography, which involves opening the camera shutter for a long duration, exposing the lens to more light. This results in a blurred image. About his photographs, Baryshnikov says: “I wanted the audience to see, to be able to imagine, the movement before and after, not just the frozen moment.” Dancing Away opened in November 2014 and continues through January 31, 2015.

In the video below Baryshnikov discusses his photographs of dancers, including how he first began photographing dancers in The Dominican Republic.

In 2009 Mikhail Baryshnikov released a book of his photographs, titled Merce My Way, in which he pays homage to the work of master choreographer Merce Cunningham. The book includes 85 color images of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.
