Tony and Academy Award-winning actor Joel Grey is also a photographer. He says that he has always taken pictures and collected photographs, however he only recently began showing them. Grey’s work has been the subject of solo shows in New York, Los Angeles and Berlin. His photographs are part of the permanent collection of The Whitney Museum of American Art and the New York Public Library.

The next exhibition of Joel Grey’s photographs will be at Steven Kasher Gallery in New York City. The exhibition, titled “Joel Grey: The Billboard Papers”, consists of 10 large-scale color photographs of torn and decaying billboards from the streets of New York. According to the gallery’s description, “The photographs resemble paper collages, revealing dramatic and unexpected layers of the billboards’ past.” Grey created the photographs with an iPhone 5.

The Billboard Papers opens September 12, 2013 and continues through October 19, 2013. The show coincides with the release of The Billboard Papers, Grey’s fourth book of photography. Artist Ross Bleckner writes in the preface: ”This is Grey’s signature theme: the ephemeral and overlooked evidence of urban development and decay. These photographs are tapestries of embedded memories, constantly fleeting and subject to change, or demolition, or renewal.”

There will be an opening reception and book signing September 12, 2013. Contact the gallery for more information.

In 2003 Joel Grey released his first book of photographs, Pictures I Had to Take. He later published Looking Hard at Unexamined Things and 1.3: Images from My Phone.
