Steve Martin Music Inspired by Martin Mull Painting

Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, Love Has Come For You

Comedian, actor, author and playwright Steve Martin is also Grammy winning bluegrass banjoist and songwriter. Later this month, Steve Martin will be releasing Love Has Come For You with singer and songwriter Edie Brickell. In an interesting twist, the cover of the upcoming album features a painting by actor, musician and painter Martin Mull. Martin Mull is an accomplished painter.  He earned both a bachelor of fine arts degree and a master of fine arts degree from Rhode Island School of Design. Paintings by Martin Mull are in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, The Whitney Museum of Art, New York and the Total Contemporary Art Museum, Seoul, and others. Martin Mull’s paintings are photorealistic images based on discarded family photographs and images from magazines of the 1950s and 1960s. Martin Mull also performed as a musician early in his career and recorded several albums.

Steve Martin talks about Martin Mull and the painting in the video below. Martin says that he has known Martin Mull since the late 60s or early 70s and knew him as an accomplished painter. He has been collecting Mull’s paintings throughout his life and he owns the painting used for the album cover. He and Edie Brickell sit in a set designed to mimic the Martin Mull painting.
