Nikki Sixx is probably best known as the bassist of the rock band Mötley Crüe. Unfortunately, as with many people in the music business, Sixx became involved with drugs. He is said to have nearly died due to an overdose of heroin in 1987. Shortly thereafter Sixx overcame his drug addiction and became focused on photography. The heading for his Tumblr blog says: “I’m a Recovering addict. Camera’s are my new drug.”

When asked how his recovery from addiction directly affected the pictures he creates,  he says: “It softened my heart,” Sixx said, explaining that even if a subject is disfigured, “I see the beauty in it. You get clarity as you get sober, and you get clarity as you get older.”

In 2011 Nikki Sixx published This Is Gonna Hurt: Music, Photography and Life Through the Distorted Lens of Nikki Sixx. According to the publisher’s description of the book, “It is a collection of compelling photography and stories that capture the rage, love, optimism, darkness, and determination that shape his work.”

Nikki Sixx talks about his photography in the video below.
