Most people last saw Todd Marinovich in a football uniform. The star quarterback led the USC Trojans to a Rose Bowl victory in 1990 and was drafted into the NFL by the Los Angeles Raiders in 1991 after his sophomore season. Where is he now? You might ask. In addition to teaching young quarterbacks, Todd Marinovich is now an artist, creating paintings, drawings, and wood sculptures. Some of his paintings and drawings are football or sports-related; others are colorful abstracts and portraits of well-known people. He also does commissioned pieces.
Defeat III by Todd Marinovich
Todd was kind enough to answer a few questions for me about his artwork.
Lorrie: When did you start making art and how did you get started?
Todd: I have been creating art as far back as I can remember. In elementary school art class was never long enough. Time seemed nonexistent. As I’ve gotten older I have realized that creating for me is an absolute necessity for my overall well-being. When creating I feel connected and free simultaneously.
Lorrie: Do you have any formal training in art?
Todd: I was studying Fine Art at the University of Southern California before I left for the NFL after my sophomore season.
Lorrie: When did you begin selling your artwork?
Todd: I have only been selling my art for the last few years since 2009.
Lorrie: Do you have a studio, or a particular place where you work on your art?
Todd: I have an indoor/outdoor studio at the beach where I live.
Lorrie: Some people may find it unusual for an athlete to also be an artist, particularly someone in a sport as rough as football. Do you think there is a contradiction there, or do you think there is some relationship between the two?
Todd: I think there’s a distinct relationship between the two for me. Football had always been an avenue of expression and also with art. They both have the magical effect of rocketing me into the moment.
