Academy Award nominated director Gus Van Sant and Actor James Franco, nominee and co-host of the 2011 Oscars, have teamed up for “Unfinished.” “Unfinished”, by Gus Van Sant and James Franco is an exhibition of film and visual art at Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills.

“Unfinished” features the film, My Own Private River, which is a collaboration between Van Sant and Franco. Franco created My Own Private River from footage from Van Sant’s film My Own Private Idaho which starred River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves. Much of the footage used did not make it into the final cut of My Own Private Idaho. My Own Private River includes a score by Michael Stipe, lead vocalist for the alternative rock band R.E.M. Stipe says that the music is “remixed and re-imagined new songs off of the upcoming R.E.M. album Collapse into Now.

The film is accompanied by seven artworks by Van Sant. The paintings are described as “portraits of young men who recall characters in My Own Private Idaho — defiant, circumspect, and devil-may-care insouciants.”

Gus Van Sant obtained a BA from the Rhode Island School of Design where he studied painting and cinema. He has exhibited his art at several galleries and public institutions. James Franco obtained a BA from UCLA and an MFA in Creative Writing at Columbia University. He is currently enrolled in the Digital Media Department at the Rhode Island School of Design. I addition to acting, Franco is also actively engaged in performance art, painting, video, and installation art.

Unfinished opened Saturday, February 26, 2011 and continues through Saturday, April 9, 2011. Contact the gallery for more information.
