Dennis Hopper, 1955 by Roddy McDowall
Christie’s upcoming Interiors auction features works from the collection of filmmaker, actor, artist, and art collector Dennis Hopper. The collection includes many items by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Wallace Berman, and many others. The collection includes photogaphs, drawings, and paintings of Dennis Hopper by Julian Schnabel, Helmut Newton, Annie Leibovitz, Victor Skrebneski, Andy Warhol, and others. The auction also includes artwork owned by Dennis Hopper created by other actors such as, Viggo Mortensen, Robert Dean Stockwell, Martin Mull and Roddy McDowall.

Other interesting pieces in the auction include the Andy Warhol portrait of Mao Zedong which has two bullet holes from gunshots by Dennis Hopper. Warhol called Dennis Hopper a collaborator. There is also a black and white photograph of actress and singer Michelle Phillips, with the words “To my darling Dennis in memory of eight glorious days of marital bliss love, Michelle”, referring to her eight-day marriage to Dennis Hopper in 1970.
Dennis Hopper is said to have been introduced to collecting art in the 1960s by actor Vincent Price, also an avid art collector.
The auction takes place January 11 and 12, 2011 in New York.
