Self Portrait by Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp the actor has many fans and admirers, however, many people don’t know about Johnny Depp the musician and painter. Johhny Depp says that his first love was music. He began playing guitar as a teenager and he first came to Los Angeles with a band called The Kids. It wasn’t until The Kids disbanded that Johnny needed money and began acting.
Somewhere along the way Johnny Depp began painting. According to an interview with Vanity Fair, whenever Depp gets bored or can’t sleep, he paints—specializing in oil portraits. “When I can focus on something like guitar or painting, I do,” he says. “I started painting people I admire, like Kerouac, Bob Dylan, Nelson Algren, Marlon Brando, Patti Smith, my girl, my kids. I painted Hunter a couple of times. Keith Richards. What I love to do is paint people’s faces, y’know, their eyes. Because you want to find that emotion, see what’s going on behind their eyes.”
He also uses his artwork to prepare for his acting roles. According to a LA Times interview, “When he takes on a role, Johnny Depp often paints a watercolor portrait of the still-forming character to help find his face and personality.”
